Lester Lanin Goes to College

Lester Lanin was a bandleader famous for long medleys.  I admit, I'd never heard of him before I picked up this 1958 album.

It's OK for dancing, you might say.  And these are definitely woven-together medleys!

01. Medley 1: 'S Wonderful /  Easy to Love /  I Can't Give You Anything But Love /  Taking a Chance on Love /  Colonel Bogey  (5:12)
02. Medley 2: Blue Moon /  Stardust /  Sentimental Journey  (3:52)
03. Medley 3: Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing /  True Love /  On the Sunny Side of the Street  (2:38)
04. Carioca ( 2:36)
05. Medley 4: Laura /  Deep Purple /  Tin Roof Blues  (3:15)
06. Medley 5: Blue Skies /  Mister Sandman /  My Blue Heaven /  I Wish I Were in Love Again /  Panama  (4:11)
07. Medley 6: It's Delovely /  You're Sensational /  Ev'rything I've Got /  Love Walked In /  Alexander's Ragtime Band /  Charleston  (5:51)
08. Medley 7: I'm in the Mood for Love /  Moonglow /  Tenderly /  Sophisticated Swing  (5:00)
09. Medley 8: They Can't Take That Away from Me /  Love Is Here to Stay /  That Old Black Magic  (3:53)
10. Medley 9: Lester Lanin Cha-Cha /  Por Favor /  Anything Can Happen-Mambo  (3:02)
11. Medley 10: Little Brown Jug /  In the Mood  (3:48)
12. Medley 11: Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful? After You've Gone /  Hawaiian War Chant  (3:07)

... Although what the album's name has to do with its content, I can't fathom.  We have the album title, and a cover photo of too-old "college" students, but ... how this idea intersects with the musical program, is beyond me.  Somebody school me!

See you Thursday.

  1. nah, no... NO! man, my dad had this record in with his records and I wanted to like it, I really did. The cool way the kids on the front are dressed, and the song titles and wording on the sleeve sure promises some swingin' times. It was even on red see-through vinyl if I'm remembering correctly. I definitely recall quite clearly how when I put the actual record on the turntable it was totally shit. Strictly for squares man, total bummer.

  2. I agree. This is old-hat hep, not hip. But even squares have a place in our Brave New World, right? (perhaps listening to this as they wax our cars ....)
