Jungle Fantastique

With this 1958 release, more than a little goes too far ... It's charming for a few minutes, but strangely monotonous after a few tracks.

Listen for yourself, and decide.  See you Thursday!

Take a Peek at This Majestic Procession

It's another grand presentation from the Musical Heritage Society.  1991 is the release date.

Some may snicker, but my first exposure to Mussorgsky's grand Pictures at an Exhibition was Emerson, Lake & Palmer's 1971 prog-rock arrangement.  Soon thereafter I heard Ravel's orchestral transcription.

Outer Space Music

Not music, it’s clichéd “spooky” or “unreal” soap-opera-type mood emanations.  To my ears it's tragically dated to the same era which produced much of the library music used in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Why do you think I have this ourageous-uh ack-SENT-uh?

See you Thursday.

Sealed with a Bliss

This 1980 cassette may take you to dreamland!

Nuttin' for Christmas

...And you guy's ain't gettin' no more Christmas music until NEXT December!  Hope your experience of Somebody's Birthday was unprocessed and genuine.  See you Monday!

Gallopin' Galway!

This 1986 cassette is much better than I expected.  Less cheesy, i mean.

The performances come across as straightforward and not maudlin.

To me, "maudlin" is the ultimate insult to Christmas message.  Emotional manipulation makes money, but it stinks.  (Apply to your favorite TV channel if you wish.)

02 - Shepherd's Pipe Carol
03 - Air from Suite No. 3 In D

Christmas Favorites for Harp

Don't Deserve a HALO

That is, the company releasing this treacle is "HALO."

It's a 1976 cassette.  Everyone involved in this should be ashamed for drowning the excitement of Christmas in an overdone, pseudo-reverential pall.  Yuck.

See ya Thursday!  Until then, hold all calls unless you can look up the number.

This Is Fun Piano Music

I first bought the LP version of this album from the remainders table at the OCU Bookstore, for which thank heaven!

Here's the Discogs page for that release.  The selections:

Halfdan Kjerulf:

1. Wiegenlied, Op.4, No.3

2. Menuett, Op.12, No.2

3. Caprice, Op.12, No.4

4. Impromptu, Op.12, No.9

5. Albumblatt, Op.24, No.1

6. Allegro, Op.24, No.1

7. Springtanz, Op.27, No.2

8. Sechs Skizzen (Six Pieces), Op.28: 1. Allegro

9. Sechs Skizzen (Six Pieces), Op.28: 2. Adagio

10. Sechs Skizzen (Six Pieces), Op.28: 3. Allegro Animato

11. Sechs Skizzen (Six Pieces), Op.28: 4. Scherzo. Allegro Molto

12. Sechs Skizzen (Six Pieces), Op.28: 5. 12. Frulingslied

13. Sechs Skizzen (Six Pieces), Op.28: 6. Idylle. Moderato

14. Scherzo, Op.29

Emil Sjögren:

15. 'Erotikon', Op.10: 1. Allegro

16. 'Erotikon', Op.10: 2. Allegretto

17. 'Erotikon', Op.10: 3. Vivace

18. 'Erotikon', Op.10: 4. Andantino

19. 'Erotikon', Op.10: 5. Allegretto Con Moto

Something about these pieces is both thoughtful and playful, romping and serious (but not particularly "Erotikon"-esque).  so of course when I discovered a CD release, I had to buy it.

What do you think?  Did I make a wise purchase?  See ya Monday!
