You Honk, I'll Tonk

This 1955 LP has some very competent playing, but it's a bit TOO tongue-in-cheek for me, what with the sound effects you can notice here and there.

02. Honeysuckle Rose (2:01)

03. Bill Bailey (2:13)

05. How You Gonna Keep 'em Down on the Farm (1:52)

06. Kitten on the Keys (2:13)

Visit My New Blog to Learn About the Race to the Moon!

Yep, this is a proffering of all the hundreds of newspaper and magazine clippings I collected in the late 1960s.

And there'll be new posts of a different contemporaneous news item (sometimes many pages at once) over MOON-DAY (get it)?

See you over there every Monday, at Mark's Moon Memories !

See you here (and there!) on Monday, campers!

Zambian Acapella

It's a 1993 CD which you may find charming.  For me it was a one-time listen.

03. Swing Down Sweet Chariot (2:35)
04. How Great Thou Art (2:34)
05. I Shiwi Yaishile (The Word Came) (3:34)

Acapella Away!

See you on Monday.

Too Slanted for Me

These are probably considered "art songs."  They're not necessarily accessible or melodic.  Even dear Emily's words can't save some of them.

01. Cary John Franklin - Musicians wrestle everywhere (3:25)
02. Robert Greenlee - This is my letter to the world (3:55)
03. William Roy - This Little Rose (1:54)
04. Robert Baksa - Two butterflies (3:10)
05. Robert Baksa - I'm nobody (1:03)
06. Aaron Copland - Going to Heaven! (3:29)
07. William Goldberg - I Shall Keep Singing (3:10)
08. Richard Pearson Thomas - Wild Nights – Wild Nights! (1:29)
09. Brian Banks - A Night (3:31)
10. Earl George - The heart asks a pleasure first ... (1:36)
11. Ethan Haimo - I Died for Beauty (3:06)
12. Donald Betts - Much Madness is divinest Sense (2:25)
13. Donald Betts - My Life Closed Twice before its Close (3:35)
14. Robert Baksa - There's a certain slant of light (4:13)
15. Ken Langer - I heard a fly (2:31)
16. Beth Wiemann - A Soul Selects (2:59)
17. Duke Aperans - Wild nights – wild nights (2:02)
18. John Duke - Have you got a brook in your little heart? (2:38)
19. John Duke - I taste a liquor never brewed (2:14)

A Different Slant of Light

To me, this album is depressing because the singer's voice has wild vibrato.  She can't stay on pitch.

See you on Thursday.

Sleazy, Meet Cheesy!

This is a 1982 release which is competently performed but distressingly cheesy.

02. Endless Love (3:53)
03. Baby James (2:18)
04. Fame (3:10)
05. Sunshine Love (3:56)
06. Cavatina (Deer Hunter Theme) (3:32)
07. The Homecoming (2:34)

09. Music Box Dancer (3:21)

15. Across the Sea (3:14)
16. The Rose (3:18)

Track 12, "Spooked on Classics," is really disappointing, with lame "scary" laughs.  If you cringe, then we share mutual discomfort levels.

MA-156 - Seventies Strut

Yes, this cover design is an intentional deceit.  Because these boffo tracks are not the kind of song you'd hear on Top-40 radio in the Seventies.  They're better!

Symphonies of the Planets

Yup, this is a album of filtered white noise from space.  All gussied up with a spiffy cover.  It's one track, about a half-hour long.

Symphonies of the Planets

Now you too can space out!

See you on Thursday.

Eduard Klassen - Folk Harp Melodies

You may like this or be repulsed.  It all depends on your appreciation for "wall-of-sound" synth.  In my opinion, the synth makes the acceptable harp music unbearable.

Traditional Flute Music of the Native American

My problem is, the cassette liner (and Discogs) say that this cassette had 14 tracks.  For the life of me, I found only 12.  Feel free to paste all the single tracks together and divide by 14 if you wish.  No, the timings didn't match the blank spaces between selections either.

God Bless America Volume 3

01. God Bless the USA (3:13)
02. America the Beautiful (3:08)
03. God Bless America (3:11)
04. The Crusader (4:40)
05. Hands Across the Sea (2:42)
06. The Diplomat March (3:10)
07. The Thunderer (2:35)
08. El Capitan (2:18)
09. American Patrol (3:36)
10. Amazing Grace (4:19)
11. The Star Spangled Banner (1:42)

This is what you may call "Various Artists," but none of them are credited.  Some notes, however:

Track #1 may be the "original" Lee Greenwood, but some sneaky editing has removed the word “today” from the first verse:  “I’d thank my lucky stars to be livin’ here ......”

#2 sounds like the terrible vocalist heard on DC Talk’s Jesus Freak album who sings some of the lines to the title song.  Just creepy.

#3 OK, but some of the pronunciations don’t sound like Americans are singing.  Especially “from the mountains, to the prairies”

The instrumental marches aren’t bad, they sound like a circus band – enthusiastic even if not perfect.

#10 The woman has a big fruity voice with too much vibrato and she drifts off pitch in the a capella sections.  Too bad.

#11 The same poor lady over-performs our national anthem.

Well, see what you think.  Even such a mish-mash can't dull the wonders of "the only country deliberately founded on a good idea," as John Gunther once wrote.

See you on Thursday, fellow Americans and all other wellwishers!

UPDATE:  Thanks to the person who pointed out that I did not post the link!
