MA-87 - It Exploded from the 1980s

While pop music in the 1960s and 1970s was wonderful -- I grew up with the Beatles, the Grass Roots, Guess Who, etc, etc in the air -- there's a deep fountain of wonderful and fun creativity (and even more crap) to be found in the pop music of the 1980s.

Some of it I heard on the radio or on albums ... some I've discovered more recently.  Hence this continuation (with many more to come) of what for me are some of the decade's greatest (and/or weirdest) musical moments.

Lester Lanin Goes to College

Lester Lanin was a bandleader famous for long medleys.  I admit, I'd never heard of him before I picked up this 1958 album.

It's OK for dancing, you might say.  And these are definitely woven-together medleys!

... Although what the album's name has to do with its content, I can't fathom.  We have the album title, and a cover photo of too-old "college" students, but ... how this idea intersects with the musical program, is beyond me.  Somebody school me!

Some, like Tracks #3, #6, and #14 you hardly hear anymore.  They're the edited, "single" versions of songs that are more familiar as the album tracks.  Honestly, how long since YOU have heard the "single version" of Grand Funk's "Close to Home"?

My naive son (in his 30s) was shocked and weirded out that a song like "Timothy," Track #7, was played on the air, especially in the ancient 1970s.  He was shocked, shocked, to learn that songs about cannibalism were present on the public airwaves.

When you heard this song on the radio in 1971, it was probably followed by an ad for Space Food Sticks.
