Re-Post: Sci Fi Music on the Laserlight Label

I found this cassette in a dump at Skaggs Albertson's, around 1992.  I had never heard of some of these titles, but I'm a sucker for cover versions of Star Trek themes.

01. Vangelis - Blade Runner

02. Richard Strauss - 2001 A Space Odyssey

03. Jerry Goldsmith – Alien

04. John Williams - Return of the Jedi

05. John Williams - Star Wars

06. John Williams – ET

07. Les Baxter - The Black Hole

08. Wagener  Lohmer - Silent Moon

09. K Doldinger - The Neverending Story

10. Stu Phillips - Battlestar Galactica

11. P Thomas - The Noah's Ark Principle

12. P Thomas - Raumpatrouille Orion

13. John Williams - The Time Tunnel

14. Marius Constant - The Twilight Zone

15. Alexander Courage - Star Trek

16. John Williams - Close Encounters of the Third Kind

17. Leith Stevens - War of the Worlds

18. John Williams - Raiders of the Lost Ark

19. Wagener  Lohmer – Frost

So, here's your chance to figure out what a "Raumpatrouille" is.  To me, it sounds like "Booty Patrol," a concept which (I trust) I outgrew about age 17.

New Age, Same Aimlessness

This 1980 cassette is the musical equivalent of a baby crawling around in a playpen.  It's diverting to observe, but there are only so many toys to play with, and the kid keeps going around in circles.

National Geographic's Moonlight Ragtime

You know how, in many stories, a first-person narrator will reminisce that their first views of nekkid women was when they read National Geographic?

Well, that kind of journalistic honesty is not part of this album.  It's a fine album, but everything here has been arranged and performed to perfection. This record is intended to embody your best, most cultured idea of ragtime, and not to evince any original, semi-gritty reality.

Still, even this mediated version of ragtime is lots o' fun!

01. The Easy Winners (4:27)

02. Weeping Willow (4:50)

03. Palm Leaf Rag (2:33)

04. Baltimore Todolo (3:23)

05. Bethena (4:03)

06. The Cascades (3:47)

07. Maple Leaf Rag (3:04)

08. Sunflower Slow Drag (3:57)

09. The Entertainer (2:36)

10. Sunshine Rag (4:21)

Also included are assembled scans of the liner notes and illos from this gatefold LP.

See you on Thursday!

Freedomland, USA!

This was the name of an American-History theme park in New York.  It was also the name of a 1960 album produced to plug the place.  It’s almost embarrassing in its gosh-wow sincerity.

01 - Overture to "Freedomland"

02 - Little Old New York

03 - Satellite City

04 - Danny the Dragon

05 - The Jalopy Song

06 - Pine Country

07 - Johnny Freedom

08 - On the Showboat

09 - San Francisco Fran

10 - So Long, Ma

11 - The Chicago Fire

You may feel like you’re watching a scene from Green Acres – one of those times when Oliver Douglas starts orating and an unknown, offscreen, non-diegetic band sarcastically plays “Glory Hallelujah.”  But that’s America, too!

Freedomland, USA!

The place also has a fan site.

See you back here on Monday, kids!
